In this industrial society, we are facing environmental challenges in our daily life, from unclean air to polluted water, to many toxic materials in our house or backyard. Recent water pollution in Songhua river by the chemical benzene and the nitrobenzene class compound reminders us the danger of chemical pollution in water, and also shows urgent needs in education about how to protect your family in case of this emergency. Houston is an industrial city and surrounded by many petroleum chemical plants. Chemical release incidents are often reported by the local media. Air pollution is not only due to the chemicals release from chemical plants, but also the automobile emission. In order to live a health life, we need to understand what are the standards for clean air or water, how to create a clean environment in your home, how to avoid some toxic materials in your home (such as Asbestos and toxic mold), etc. Responding to these concerns, the CAPST incited Dr. Max Lee, Dr. Jisen Wu, and Dr. Shaofu Wu and organized a seminar focus on environmental and heath issues. This seminar is sponsored by the Chinese Association of Professional in Science and Technology (CAPST). Three invited speakers are all experts in environmental science, and have many year experiences in clean air, water, and toxic chemicals. The objectives of this seminar are to give the audiences some needed information about what are the toxic materials in the air, water, and home, what are their effects on health, and how to create a clean environment for your family. The topics of this seminar included:
After the presentations, the speakers answered several questions from the audiences and had a comprehensive discussion on issue related to environmental and health. (by Shaofu Wu) |
